Maintaining and resurfacing hard sports surfaces is essential for preserving play quality and ensuring player safety. Over time, weather conditions, constant use, and natural wear and tear cause the surface to deteriorate, leading to problems like cracking, fretting, and surface inconsistencies. These issues not only affect gameplay but also heighten the risk of injury.
To slow the deterioration, regular maintenance such as cleaning, repainting, and addressing minor cracks or drainage issues is key. However, even with the best maintenance practices, most hard surfaces have a limited lifespan, generally around ten years, before rennovation is required.
Regular resurfacing not only prolongs the lifespan of the court but also provides a consistent and safe playing environment for athletes.
Porous Asphalt Resurfacing
The first signs resurfacing is required is when the surface begins to fret—a process where the top layer breaks down.
At this stage, resurfacing becomes necessary. The process of resurfacing porous asphalt surfaces typically involves applying a 25mm layer of porous asphalt on top of the existing surface. This allows for better drainage and restores the court’s playing quality. The new surface can either be painted to enhance its appearance and performance or replaced with a different surface type depending on specific requirements.
The resurfacing of porous asphalt courts can often be carried out without the need to remove the existing surface. Providing the deterioration of the court does not exceed certain tolerances a new porous asphalt layer can be laid over the top of the existing court surface. This will restore playing characteristics, increase levels of grip and improve the look for your porous asphalt court without the lengthy (and costly) process of removing the original court surface. In instances where a court has been neglected for a number of years or has been damaged by extended or improper use we may undertake a double-layer resurfacing. Double-layer resurfacing, as the name would suggest, is a two-stage resurfacing process designed for damaged courts or those showing advanced deterioration. Polymeric Resurfacing
We offer resurfacing for polymeric and acrylic surfaces too. The process involved depends on the condition. As a porous asphalt base is typically installed underneath the top surface, it may be necessary to remove the top surface and resurface the asphalt base, before overlaying a new surface.
