Specialist Asphalt For Sports Surfaces

Tennis and MUGA grade porous asphalt is a specialised construction material used in the creation of tennis courts, MUGAs and other sports surfaces. This material is engineered to provide optimal performance for athletes, combining durability with environmental benefits. Unlike traditional asphalt, porous asphalt permits water to drain through its surface, ensuring an all-weather court that allows the game to continue. The history of this material dates back to the late 20th century when sports facilities began seeking more sustainable and player-friendly surfaces.

Porous asphalt is characterized by its high permeability, which is achieved through a carefully controlled mix of aggregates and binders. The material typically includes larger aggregates that create interconnected void spaces, allowing water to filter through the surface. This unique composition not only enhances drainage but also contributes to the surface's flexibility and resistance to cracking.

Designing a court or pitch with porous asphalt requires attention to detail in both the materials used and the construction process. The court's sub-base must be carefully prepared to support the asphalt and ensure proper drainage. The permeability of the surface is critical, as it directly affects the surface playability and longevity. Additionally, the thickness of the asphalt layer is optimized to balance structural integrity with water infiltration capabilities.

One of the key advantages of tennis or MUGA grade porous asphalt is its positive environmental impact. By allowing water to percolate through its surface, it reduces runoff and helps recharge groundwater.

Tennis grade porous asphalt provides a playing surface that meets the rigorous demands of the sport. Its permeability ensures that the court remains playable even after rain, while its texture allows for consistent ball bounce and player footing. The material's flexibility also reduces the risk of surface cracks, extending the court's lifespan and reducing maintenance costs.

Construction Processes

Construction Processes

The construction of a tennis court, MUGA, or pitch, using porous asphalt involves several critical steps. Site preparation includes grading and compacting the sub-base to create a stable foundation. The asphalt is then mixed and laid in layers, using either a mini-paver or screeded with bars, with each layer carefully compacted to ensure uniformity. After installation, the surface must cure for a specified period before it is ready for use. Ongoing maintenance, such as cleaning and crack repairs, is essential to preserve the court's performance and longevity.

The asphalt surface can be coated with specialised slip-resistant paint for tennis, netball, or MUGA courts, or covered with a synthetic surface like 3G turf or artificial grass.

Premier Sports Surfaces are experienced in meeting the precise tolerances needed to create a uniform, level surface and employs its own in-house tarmac team to ensure consistent, high-quality results.
